Web Design Cost

Web Design Cost

Web Design Cost

Key takeaways

  • Published data shows a very wide range, so treat any single “average” with caution.
  • GoodFirms reported $1,000 to $15,000 for a small business website of 5 to 10 pages in its 2024 survey of more than 100 development companies.
  • Clutch reports that most web design projects on its platform cost under $10,000, with typical U.S. agency rates of $100 to $149 an hour.
  • Scope, custom features, content writing and search setup move the price more than anything else.
  • Budget for ongoing costs too: hosting, domain renewal, licenses and maintenance.

Web design for a small business website commonly costs somewhere between about $1,000 and $15,000, according to a GoodFirms survey of more than 100 web development companies, which put a 5 to 10 page small business site in that range. Clutch, a directory and review platform for service providers, reports that most web design projects on its platform cost less than $10,000, while its overall average is much higher because a few large projects pull it up. Where your project lands depends mainly on scope, custom features and how much content the designer creates.

Those numbers are useful as a sanity check, not a price list. The rest of this article explains what the published data says, what drives the cost and how to budget for the full life of the site. For the broader decision, including contracts and ownership, see our guide to hiring a web designer.

What the published data says

There is no official price index for web design, so the best you can do is look at named sources and understand what each one measures. Here are three, as accessed in October 2026.

SourceWhat it measuresFigures reported
GoodFirms, 2024 survey of 100+ web development companiesTypical project price by website typeSmall business website (5 to 10 pages): $1,000 to $15,000. E-commerce store: $5,000 to $50,000+. Basic personal website: under $500.
Clutch, pricing data updated September 21, 2026Projects and rates from agencies listed on its platformMost projects under $10,000. Average project cost $38,105. Typical range $2,000 to $100,000. U.S. agency rates $100 to $149 an hour. Website builder services $25 to $49 an hour.
Upwork, web designer cost pageHistorical freelance contracts worldwideMedian hourly rate $21; typical range $15 to $30 an hour.

A few cautions. Clutch’s average is skewed by large agency projects, so its statement that most projects cost under $10,000 is more relevant for a small business. Upwork’s rates are global, so they include freelancers in lower cost countries and are not a guide to U.S. freelance rates. GoodFirms surveyed development companies, not freelancers. None of these sources is wrong; they just measure different slices of the market.

What drives the price

Two quotes for “a five page website” can differ by thousands of dollars because they describe different amounts of work. These are the factors that matter most.

Number of unique layouts

Ten service pages that share one template cost much less than ten pages that each need their own design. Count unique layouts, not pages, when you compare quotes.

Custom features

Contact forms and simple galleries are cheap. Online booking, payments, member areas, multilingual content and integrations with your CRM or inventory software add time, especially if they need custom code rather than an established plugin. Our article on web designer vs web developer explains when a feature needs a developer.

Content

Writing good page copy takes time. If the designer writes or substantially edits your text, expect that to be a meaningful part of the price. If you supply finished text and photos, the cost drops, and so does the risk of delay.

Platform

Building on a website builder or on WordPress with a well made theme costs less than a fully custom design. Clutch’s figures reflect this: services building on platforms like Wix, WordPress, Squarespace, Webflow and Shopify typically charge $25 to $49 an hour on its platform, compared with $100 to $149 for typical U.S. web design agencies. Our comparison of the best website builder for small business can help you choose a platform.

Search and migration work

Setting up page titles, headings, structured data, an XML sitemap and redirects from an old site takes time, and it is easy to leave out of a low quote. If you are replacing an existing site, redirects are essential: Google recommends permanent server side redirects from old URLs to new ones when a site moves.

Who does the work

A freelancer usually charges less per hour than an agency. An agency can bring design, content, development and search skills together and cover absences. Location also matters: Clutch reports hourly rates from under $25 in some countries to $100 to $149 in the United States, Canada and Australia.

Pricing models you will see

  • Fixed price. A set fee for a defined scope. Easier to budget, but read the scope carefully; anything outside it is extra.
  • Hourly. You pay for time used. Fair for unclear or evolving projects, but ask for an estimate and a cap.
  • Monthly subscription. A lower upfront cost with a monthly fee that covers the site, hosting and support. Check who owns the site if you stop paying.

GoodFirms reported that 70% of the companies it surveyed prefer hourly and fixed price models, while only 10% rely on retainers.

The costs after launch

The design fee is only part of what a website costs. Plan for these ongoing items:

  • Hosting. A monthly or yearly fee, varying with the provider and the size of the site.
  • Domain renewal. A yearly fee to your registrar.
  • Licenses. Premium themes, plugins or builder subscriptions, usually billed yearly.
  • Maintenance. Software updates, backups, security monitoring and small fixes. You can do it yourself or pay for a plan. Our article on website maintenance cost covers what that typically involves.
  • Content and search work. New pages, blog posts and search optimization, if you want the site to grow.

Make sure every one of these accounts is in your name. A low monthly fee that comes with the designer holding your domain or hosting can become expensive if you ever want to leave.

How to get an accurate quote

Write a one page brief with your goals, pages, features, content status, deadline and a budget range. Send the same brief to three or four designers and ask each for an itemized proposal. When prices differ a lot, compare line by line: the gap usually sits in content, revisions, testing, search setup or training. Our guide on how to choose a web designer lists the questions to ask, and if you want a quote for your own project you can request one here.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a small business website cost?

GoodFirms reported $1,000 to $15,000 for a small business site of 5 to 10 pages, and Clutch reports that most projects on its platform cost under $10,000. The final price depends on scope, features, content and who does the work.

How much do web designers charge per hour?

Clutch reports typical U.S. agency rates of $100 to $149 an hour and $25 to $49 an hour for services building on website builders. Upwork reports a global median of $21 an hour for freelance web designers on its platform.

Why do web design quotes vary so much?

Quotes describe different amounts of work. The number of unique page layouts, custom features, content writing, search setup and redirects all change the price, so compare proposals line by line rather than by total.

What ongoing costs come after a website is built?

Expect hosting, yearly domain renewal, theme or plugin licenses, and maintenance such as updates, backups and security monitoring. Content and search work are extra if you want the site to grow.

Is a monthly website subscription a good deal?

It can spread the cost, but check who owns the domain, hosting and design. If the site disappears or cannot be moved when you stop paying, the low monthly fee may cost more in the long run.
